Poultry smuggling threatens bird flu control efforts

13/04/2006 -- 11:21 AM

Ha Noi, April 13 (VNA) - Poultry smuggling in northern and southern border provinces is currently the biggest threat for a recurrence of an avian influenza outbreak in poultry and humans, Deputy Health Minister Trinh Quan Huan said at a meeting of the national steering board for bird flu control in Ha Noi on April 12.

Reports at the meeting said that the H5N1 virus was found in seized smuggled poultry. The board asked localities, particularly border provinces, to strengthen measures to stop poultry smuggling to prevent the spread of the virus to humans.

The Health Ministry is continuing to provide bird flu control facilities to all localities and hold training courses for local cadres.-Enditem
