Viet Nam among top countries in the world in afforestation

20/04/2006 -- 5:02 PM

New York, Apr. 20 (VNA) - Viet Nam is one of the top ten countries in the world in term of acreage in planting new forests and replanting deforested areas, according to a report recently released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Other countries making efforts at afforestation in Asia and the Pacific region include China, Indonesia, India, Japan, and Thailand. China posted an overall increase in forest area of more than 4 million hectares per year between 2000 and 2005, according to FAO.

The Asia-Pacific region recorded the highest rate of afforestation in the world over the past five years. This helped the region reverse a net loss of 1.3 million hectares of forest cover per year in the 1990s, to a net gain of more than 600, 000 hectares per year between 2000 and 2005, marking it – along with Europe – as the world’s only region with a sustained increase in forests.

However, FAO warned that the Asia-Pacific region still has just 0.2 hectare of forest per person – the lowest amount per capita in the world – compared to 1.1 hectares per person outside of the region.-Enditem
