Sustainable development requires int'l collaboration

05/05/2006 -- 4:06 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Sustainable development requires a close collaboration among branches, regions and nations, it was agreed at various forums held within the framework of the on going second national conference on sustainable development in Ha Noi.

Most experts noted that special attention should be paid to ensuring environmental protection and social justice although economic development is the country's top priority. Besides building a system of criteria for sustainable development, it is necessary to raise public awareness and encourage the society as a whole to fulfil the target, they said.

Scientists will play an important role in accelerating socio-economic development while implementing sustainable development, they added. Delegates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the ministry will increase investment capital in scientific research.

Meanwhile, representatives from the industry ministry informed the forums of plans to increase the exports of processed products over semi-processed items and increase the proportion of private and foreign invested sectors in the economy. The industry ministry will promote the use of clean production methods and develop environmental industry.

Delegates also proposed many solutions to the protection of soil and sea resources, the prevention and control of natural disasters and devising development schemes.

Viet Nam's Strategic Orientation for Sustainable Development (known as Agenda 21), which is being implemented, highlights 19 priorities, which puts maintaining sustainable economic growth rate alongside changing production and consumption styles towards environmentally friendly direction.-Enditem
