ORBIS supports new eye care project in Phu Tho

08/05/2006 -- 11:17 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) - ORBIS International, a non-governmental organisation, has agreed to support another eye care project worth 2.8 billion VND (175,000 USD) in the northern midland province of Phu Tho in the 2006-2008 period.

The project aims to provide eye care equipment to the province's Centre for Prevention of Social Diseases, while Doan Hung and Thanh Son hospitals will receive cataract surgery equipment.

In the 2001-2005 period, ORBIS granted 350,000 USD to a comprehensive eye care project in Phu Tho province. The project held professional training courses for 93 doctors, nurses and technicians and provided basic eye care knowledge for more than 3,000 health workers. It provided over 6,600 cataract operations for poor patients and examination and treatment for more than 1,000 pupils with eye diseases.

ORBIS began working in Viet Nam in 1996 with hospital-based training programmes and launched a long-term blindness prevention program in late 2000. To increase access to comprehensive eye care among the rural communities of Viet Nam, ORBIS is building a number of model provincial projects that will serve as training centres for staff throughout the country. -Enditem
