Live poultry markets in Viet Nam need appropriate reform

11/05/2006 -- 7:31 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Agriculture officials from Viet Nam and the United States have gathered in Ha Noi for a workshop to discuss long-term control measures to prevent bird flu virus from spreading among live poultry.

The workshop on live poultry markets in Viet Nam was held on May 11-12 by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the US Department of Agriculture.

Addressing the workshop's opening ceremony, both Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) representative in Ha Noi Jeffrey Gibert, who is also a coordinator of the Avian Influenza Control Programme, and MARD Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong said that un-controlled sales and slaughter of poultry is the main reason behind the spread of the pandemic diseases, including avian influenza.

Citizens need to change their practice and habit of consuming live poultry, warned the two officials.

Participants at the workshop proposed actions to change the behaviour of live poultry traders and consumers, including appropriate arrangement of live poultry markets, comprehensive measures on veterinary and market administration, and provision of information on fowl product safety and the disease.

Avian influenza pandemic has had a severe impact on Viet Nam's poultry breeding sector over the last three years, with 50 million domestic fowl culled, resulting in economic loses worth trillions of Vietnamese dong.

The H5N1 avian influenza virus was transmitted to 93 people, claiming the lives of 42 of them. -Enditem
