US helps Viet Nam combat avian influenza

19/06/2006 -- 9:24 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced its support for a new public-private alliance to help Viet Nam prevent avian influenza (AI), bring the total 2006 US Government AI assistance in Viet Nam to more than 7 million USD.

The money that will be provided under the alliance is valued at 185,000 USD. Of the money, 55,000 USD will be used to enhance the global response to the AI threat by supporting efforts to strengthen the capacity of veterinarians and poultry farmers as they work to prevent and control AI outbreaks in Viet Nam, the USAID said in a press release on June 16.

The nine-month project will start by providing support to veterinarians in northern Thai Nguyen province to improve their diagnosis of AI, train veterinarians on AI epidemiological processes and tools and upgrade the country's animal health information systems.

It will also help improve the bio-safety measures of small poultry farmers and provide national dissemination of AI educational materials.-Enditem
