US's Oregonian legislators support PNTR for Viet Nam

27/06/2006 -- 11:20 AM

Washington (VNA) - The US Oregonian newspaper in its June 26 edition published an article by Jeff Kosseff entitled "US may keep doors open to Viet Nam trade" saying that Republican Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon introduced a bill this month to grant Viet Nam permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status, which would allow its entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Darlene Hooley, both Democrats from Oregon, also co-sponsored a companion bill in the House, the paper said.

"I think it's absolutely critical to help heal the wounds left over from Viet Nam," said Blumenauer, who entouraged former President Bill Clinton to Viet Nam in 2000. "We're making extraordinary progress with Viet Nam," he said.

The paper stressed that while many trade expansion plans are stalled in Congress, the bill of PNTR for Viet Nam has bipartisan support.

The bill also has a wide array of US business supporters, ranging from manufacturers to farmers who see Viet Nam as a new market for US exports, according to the paper.-Enditem
