India to help Viet Nam produce HIV drug

15/07/2006 -- 9:18 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - The Indian Government will help Viet Nam to produce a certified HIV/AIDS drug in the near future, said Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, Director of the Department for HIV/AIDS prevention under the Health Ministry.

Nga said that Viet Nam is already capable of producing the antiretroviral (ARV) drug for treatment of the fatal disease.

However, the amount of the medicine, which has yet to be certified by the World Health Organisation, is adequate for only about 2,000 HIV-infected people. This is far short of the real demand for the ARV drug.

In furtherance of the national strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention through 2010 and the 2020 vision programme, the Vietnamese Government is mulling over permits for domestic pharmaceutical companies to produce the HIV/AIDS drug.

In addition, it is calling for foreign medicine producers to sell their ARV production patents to the domestic companies.-Enditem
