Southwestern province raises rare mountainous lizards

20/07/2006 -- 11:18 AM

Tay Ninh (VNA) - Biologists in the southwestern province of Tay Ninh have successfully raised rare mountainous lizards, a species indigenous to the local Ba Den Mountain that is in danger of extinction.

The lizard raising project is being carried out by the provincial Science and Technology Department in cooperation with the Institute of Tropical Biology and the Ho Chi Minh City Biology Association.

Dr. Hoang Tien Dat, of the Institute of Tropical Biology, said the mountainous lizards have adapted to and laid eggs in the experimental raising environment at an altitude of 50-600 metres. The baby lizards also grow well after hatching.

The research team has proposed Tay Ninh province establish a preserved area in the Ba Den Mountain in order to create environmentally-favourable conditions for the endangered species to grow. -Enditem
