Viet Nam strives to join WTO's IT agreement

22/07/2006 -- 10:28 PM

Brussels (VNA) - Viet Nam on July 21 submitted to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) a draft scheme on slashing tariffs on information technology products in a bid to participate in an agreement of this body.

The scheme was presented by Ambassador Ngo Quang Xuan, Chief of the Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva, during a meeting of the WTO's Information Technology Agreement (ITA) Commission.

The Ambassador said that by joining the ITA, an indispensable condition for WTO entry agreements, Viet Nam reaffirms its determination to enter the world's largest trade organisation and to integrate into the world economy.

By being of part of the ITA, Viet Nam will have the opportunity to enter WTO members' IT markets. The Ambassador said that by opening the hi-tech IT product market, Viet Nam's bid to boost its economic development and comprehensive integration into the global trade sector will occur.

According to the Ambassador, Viet Nam is expected to gain ITA membership in 4-6 weeks after its draft scheme on tax reduction is considered by the Secretariat of the ITA Committee and its members on July 24.

He further said that the country will begin to enjoy rights and perform tasks under the agreement when it becomes a WTO member.

During the ITA Committee's meeting, Singapore, on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and other various countries lauded Viet Nam's move to join the agreement.-Enditem
