Women football prepares for qualifiers

03/08/2006 -- 11:30 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) -- Viet Nam's women football squad is preparing for the 2008 World Olympic Games qualifiers after returning home from the Asian Cup finals in Australia.

The Viet Nam team finished third in their group behind Japan and China at the Asian Cup in Adelaide last month. They lost to champions China and fourth-ranked Japan in the group stage, clinching their only win over Chinese Taipei.

The team had few days off last week before gathering again for practice for the Beijing Olympics' first qualifying round, which will take place in China early next year.

Asian Cup champion and host China and runner-up Australian automatically qualify for the Beijing Olympics finals, leaving all other Asian teams to fight for the remaining four berths at the 2008 Games.

Japan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) got passes to the second qualifiers while 12 other Asian teams compete in three groups for six top sides qualifying for the first preliminary stage. The eight teams will rival for four spots at the Beijing Olympics finals.-Enditem
