Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam is intensifying the fight against HIV/AIDS, as experts warned that the country at present has about 110,000 people living with the disease, of which 18,000 have developed full-blown AIDS.
The warning was issued at a four-day conference, which ended on September 15 in northern Lang Son province.
It was held by the Commission for Science and Education of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV), the Board for Information and Education of the Lang Son Party Committee, and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
Under the national strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention up to 2010-20, a programme is being carried out in the provinces of An Giang, Khanh Hoa and Lang Son in order to strengthen the authorities' leadership in the fight against the epidemic.
Participants at the conference, who came from 17 ministries and government agencies, and 25 departments in these provinces, have discussed the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes in Viet Nam.
It is estimated that about 10,000 Vietnamese have died from HIV/AIDS.
At another event, the Viet Nam Red Cross Central Committee has coordinated with the Global Fund to review a community-based project on caring, counselling and assisting people living with HIV/AIDS. The project has been implemented in 16 districts in Lang Son, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Ha Noi, Thanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Kien Giang between July 2005 and February 2006.-Enditem
