106,000 households in disaster-prone areas resettled

19/09/2006 -- 9:56 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - The Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has relocated a total of 106,000 households with 631,000 people from natural disaster-prone areas since 2001.

The families have been relocated mainly to southern central, northern mountainous and Viet Nam-China border regions, where the department has invested over 300 billion VND (roughly 18.8 million USD) in building infrastructure facilities and roads to help them re-establish their lives.

The government recently approved a national resettlement programme for around 75,000 households living in natural disaster-prone, remote, disadvantaged, island regions and areas surrounded by protected forests between now and 2010.

The move forms part of the government's efforts to minimise losses caused by natural calamities, improve living conditions for local people, and reduce the number of poor families in disadvantaged areas to 15 percent.-Enditem
