Quang Nam (VNA) -- Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airlines has donated a clean water system to a remote commune in the central province of Quang Nam.
The system provides fresh water to more than 1,230 residents in 300 households in Duy Hoa Commune in Duy Xuyen district.
The airlines gave 21,000 USD for the project to the non-profit East Meets West Foundation, which helped identify the water source, secure permits and give advise during construction. Mark Conroy, the foundation's country director, said the chlorinated water had been tested and approved as safe under Viet Nam standards.
Clean water will help lower the incidence of water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, viral gastroenteritis and diarrhea, the latter is a major killer of young children because of dehydration.
"With clean water, local people can save time and money away from hospitals due to fewer illnesses in the family," Conroy said. " And instead of fetching water after school from a distant source, children can have more time to study, exercise and play with their friends."
Construction of the project was supervised by a group of local people chosen by the Duy Hoa Commune People's Committee, said Le Dac Ha, deputy chairman of the committee.
Ha said most wells in La Thap Tay and Phu Lac hamlets, the area's main sources of water supply, had become polluted after the flooding season.
"Funding from Cathay Pacific is greatly appreciated. This helps improve people's health, contributes to development and raises the spirits of the poor," Ha said.-Enditem
