Seven Mekong delta provinces grow high-quality rice

25/10/2006 -- 11:21 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Seven Mekong delta provinces have started growing high-quality winter spring rice on between 15,000 and 20,000 hectares on a trial basis, according to an official from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Head of the MARD's Cultivation Department Nguyen Tri Ngoc said that these rice strains, which are being planted under a programme to grow 1 million tonnes of quality rice, can yield at least 5.5 tonnes per hectare as they can resist "ray nau" (brown plant hoppers) and other diseases that are devastating paddy fields in the Mekong delta.

The first crop under the programme is expected to yield 100,000 tonnes of rice, he added.

If the programme is successful, around 200,000 ha will be allocated to grow pest-resistant high-quality rice.-Enditem
