Japanese-funded biological safety lab put into operation

Ha Noi (VNA) - A Japanese-funded mobile biological safety lab was put into operation on Jan. 9 by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in collaboration with the Japanese International Cooperation Organisation (JICA). The third level lab will play a critical role in helping Vietnamese scientists ensure biological safety and improving the effectiveness of their research of epidemics, particularly with recent bird flu outbreaks in several localities in the southern region. It will also help the NIHE early detect new bird flu outbreaks for prompt isolation and containment, and strengthen surveillance, as well as carry out research of other emerging infectious diseases. Apart from donating 2.5 million USD to the lab, the Japanese government will also help train scientists from the institute.-Enditem
