Viet Nam begins production of iron-added fish sauce

15/01/2007 -- 4:58 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Fish sauce fortified with iron has appeared for the first time in Viet Nam, in the country's efforts to fight iron deficiency.

The Cat Hai seafood processing joint-stock company in the northern port city of Hai Phong has processed for marketing, about 2,000 litres of hi-iron fish sauce, which still keeps the normal taste as well as normal price.

The new product is part of a project to add iron to fish sauce, funded by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and was being carried out on a trial basis in some localities since 1998.

In Viet Nam, 30-40 percent of pregnant women and more than half of 2-5 year-old children suffer from iron deficiency.-Enditem
