Fibrosis linked to penicillin injections

16/01/2007 -- 8:47 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Repeated penicillin injections into the arms' muscles has resulted in deltoid muscle fibrosis that has affected almost 11,000 children nationwide, said a ministry-level study conducted by the National Hospital of Pediatrics in 2006.

Patients suffering from deltoid muscle fibrosis cannot close their arms tightly against the upper body or have bad motor functions in the shoulder's movement.

As a result, doctors warned medical clinics and people not to inject penicillin on under-five children's deltoid muscle but to use other antibiotics instead.

Vice Director of the National Hospital of Pediatrics Nguyen Van Loc said that a State-level study on the disease will be jointly conducted in eight provinces and cities by the Ha Noi Medical University, the Public Health University, National Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology and his hospital this year.

In the meantime, the Health Education Dissemination Centre of the Ministry of Health will make a documentary on conducting surgery and rehabilitation exercises for children suffering from deltoid muscle fibrosis to be applied at medical clinics.

Nearly 2,000 children suffering from the disease have received surgery and recovered well.-Enditem
