Int'l experts: suspect cases in Ca Mau not infected with H5N1

17/01/2007 -- 10:12 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - International experts have reaffirmed that four suspect human cases of type A infections in southernmost Ca Mau province caught pneumonia, but not bird flu virus strain H5N1, said a health official on Jan. 17.

Specialists from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health (MoH) announced the affirmation after testing samples taken from the patients and carefully examining their medical records, said Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, Director of the MoH's Department of Preventive Medicines.

The specialists made a trip to southern provinces last week to inspect measures to prevent type A flu in humans and poultry, during which they asked the concerned localities to ensure the accuracy of reports on the disease in order to avoid causing misled alarm among local people.

The localities were also required to increase public awareness of avian influenza by delivering leaflets and documents to every household in areas which have been struck by the epidemic.

Also at the regular meeting of the Steering Committee for the Prevention of Type A Flu in Humans, a representative of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology revealed that 12 monitoring stations nationwide have since the beginning of this year tested between 20-30 samples a day, all of which showed negative results with flu virus strain H5N1.-Enditem
