150,000 cancer patients detected in Viet Nam each year: survey

30/01/2007 -- 6:35 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - A recent survey has revealed that some 150,000 cancer patients are detected in Viet Nam each year, reported an official from the Viet Nam Cancer Association in Ha Noi on Jan. 30.

The increase in the number of people suffering from cancer is attributable to environmental pollution and poor food quality, said vice chairman of the association, Nguyen Ba Duc, who is also director of the Ha Noi-based Tumor (K) Hospital.

According to the survey, bad eating habits are responsible for approximately 80 percent of cancerous cases.

Inappropriate diet habits involving too much fat and protein, in addition to overexploitation of natural resources, and chemical additive in food products during processing and preserving, are among other reasons responsible for the increasing number of cancer patients in Viet Nam.-Enditem
