Japan confirms another H5N1 bird flu outbreak

31/01/2007 -- 10:17 PM

Tokyo (VNA) - Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Jan. 31 confirmed that poultry at Takahashi farm in Okayama prefecture died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

This was the third outbreak of bird flu confirmed in Japan so far this year.

Okayama officials said they continued to cull poultry at Hashimoto Nojo farm where 49 chickens were found dead on Jan. 29. They added that some other 12,000 birds will be culled from Feb. 1.

In an effort to prevent the spread of bird flu, the Japanese government announced on the same day new measures, including the formation of an emergency task force with experts on poultry disease, who will support the efforts of Miyazaki prefecture, which was hardest hit by bird flu.

Agriculture minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka will head the task force.--Enditem
