Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam has temporarily contained bird flu, as the country detected no outbreaks in poultry nationwide after at least 21 days, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Feb. 13.
The ministry’s Department for Veterinary, however, warned in a meeting of the National Steering Committee on Bird Flu, that the risk of recurrence is still high, particularly after the Lunar New Year Festival (Tet), because many vaccinated poultry will be slaughtered to meet the high demand during the festival and the increase in transportation.
According to the department, no avian influenza cases were discovered throughout the country over the week ending on Feb. 13, while many localities are deploying additional vaccinations for poultry. It is estimated that as many as 14 million chickens and ducks were vaccinated.
At the meeting, the committee worked out various urgent measures to prevent the resurface of bird flu in the next week, namely to tightly control of domestic fowls, increase vaccination, and raise awareness among people.
Earlier on Feb. 12, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development sent an urgent message to provincial authorities and ministries nationwide, urging them to take measures to prevent the reoccurrence of bird flu.-Enditem
