17/02/2007 -- 8:50 PM

Moscow (VNA) – The H5N1 strain of bird flu has caused poultry deaths in the south of the Moscow region, Russian officials said on Feb. 16.

Russia 's chief epidemiologist Gennady Onishchenko was quoted by Russia ’s Ria-Novosti as saying that bird flu cases have been detected in a private poultry farm in the Domodedovo district's town of Pavlovsky , where households have a total of about 700 birds.

Bird flu cases have also been detected in the Odintsovo district, west of Moscow , according to acting Governor of the Moscow region Alexei Panteleyev.

"The [sick] birds - fewer than a hundred in all - have been culled," the governor said.

He added that people who may have been in contact with the dead birds were hospitalised and underwent medical tests.-Enditem
