US to send observers to Philippine elections

26/02/2007 -- 9:39 PM

Ha noi (VNA) - The United States government is likely to send observers to the Philippines to ensure transparency in the upcoming May elections, the US Embassy said on Feb. 26.

"This is something we do in other countries and is coordinated with the host government to see and observe transparency during elections," US Embassy spokesman Matthew Lussenhop was quoted by Chinese Xinhua news agency as saying.

In 2005, the US dispatched 39 observers to monitor the polls in Mindanao, the Philippines, in 2005, but this time the observers might be sent in voting precincts nationwide, said Lussenhop.-Enditem
