Indonesia to continue developing renewable energy sources

27/02/2007 -- 11:24 AM

Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Government will continue to develop renewable sources in order to replace fossil fuel energy, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

“Our future energy sources should no longer be fossil fuel-based such as oil and coal," Yudhoyono was quoted by Antara news agency as saying at a gathering with the Sugar Group Company (SGC) management and workers in Bandar Mataram sub district in Lampung Tengah on Feb. 26.

Yudhoyono said that although the country’s coal reserves could be mined over the next 150 years, natural gas reserves over the next 60 years and petroleum reserves over the next 20 years, efforts to develop alternative energy sources should continue.

Besides achieving energy self-sufficiency, another high priority goal the government wants to reach is increasing the country’s capability to maintain sufficient food stocks.-Enditem
