ASEAN environment ministers to meet in Brunei over haze issue

27/02/2007 -- 9:32 PM

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - ASEAN environment ministers will gather in Brunei from Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 to discuss the trans-boundary haze problem.

They will discuss the issue at two meetings, including the 2nd meeting of the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Trans-boundary Haze Pollution (MSC) and the 12th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Haze, the Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) reported.

The haze problem usually arises in the region around the third quarter of the year.

It particularly worsened last year, prompting the five badly-affected nations, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand, to hold a sub-regional meeting to find a solution to the problem, caused mainly by forest and land fires in Indonesia 's Sumatra and Kalimantan.-Enditem
