Strong quake rocks Indonesia's Sumatra island

Jakarta (VNA) - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit off Indonesia's Sumatra island on the morning of Apr. 4 but there were no reports of casualties or damage, said an official from Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The quake's epicenter was 100 km southeast of Bengkulu, the capital of the province of the same name, and the quake struck at a depth of 57 kilometers, Aprilyanto from the agency was quoted by Indonesia's Antara news agency as saying.

On Apr. 3, two earthquakes with each measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rattled North Sulawesi province's capital of Manado and northern Sulawesi province. Fortunately, t here was no casualties or material damage.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic activities.-Enditem
