Viet Nam's Internet usage rate skyrockets

16/05/2007 -- 5:04 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The percentage of Vietnamese that have regular access to the internet has skyrocketed to 18.96 percent of the entire country and now exceeds the world average mark of 16.9 percent, said the Ministry of Post and Telematics on May 16.

A conference to review the last decade of Internet use in the South East Asian nation heard that since the very first link was established in the country in December 1997, Internet use has mushroomed to the point where there are now 4.4 million Internet subscriptions that serve 15.8 million users.

Addressing the conference, Minister Do Trung Ta said that the impressive development of the Internet market in Viet Nam over the past ten years would serve as a platform for an expected “Internet boom” to take place between 2007-2010.

Experts point to the education and health care fields as engines of the country's IT growth over the last decade. Viet Nam's universities and colleges are now all hooked up to the net while hospitals and medical clinics continue to access new treatment techniques via the web.

Keen to cash in on the industry's promise, the government formulated a plan that would see Internet and telecom services spearheading a sector that is expected to obtain annual growth rates that double the country’s socio-economic growth rate. The plan states that by 2010, Internet and telecom services throughout the country are forecasted to reap in close to 3.5 billion USD annually.

By 2010, the blueprints set targets of between 25-30 percent usage rates, with 30 percent of users accessing broad band services and all districts in the country's key economic regions and 70 percent of communes nationwide would all support net access . -Enditem
