US-Viet Nam Second Dioxin Remediation Workshop

20/06/2007 -- 5:04 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Representatives of the US Department of Defence and Viet Nam's Ministry of Defence met at a workshop to discuss issues related to the use of chemical herbicides and defoliants during the US war in Viet Nam.

During the two-day workshop which concluded in Ha Noi on June 19 , representatives of the Viet Nam Ministry of Defence made presentations concerning their ongoing sampling and remediation activities at dioxin- affected areas in Da Nang and Bien Hoa airfields.

Meanwhile, the US side revealed their study results over the last two years, including the most detailed maps outlining where herbicides were loaded and stored during the war.

This is the second workshop held by the two countries' armed forces on the issue. During the first workshop held in September 2005, the two sides discussed the stablisation of sites thought to be contaminated with dioxin as well as soil remediation techniques to address such contamination.
Between 1961-1971, the US army sprayed an amount of 80 million litres of toxic chemical substances to the central and southern regions of Viet Nam. The poisonous substances are continuing their courses of destruction to the environment as well as the heath and daily life of millions of Vietnamese people.-Enditem
