Viet Nam applauds Toronto’s ban of former regime flag

20/06/2007 -- 6:24 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – A Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman has applauded a decision by Toronto, Canada, to disallow the flying of the former Sai Gon regime’s three-striped flag.

Answering queries raised by correspondents regarding Viet Nam’s position on the decision on June 20, spokesman Le Dung said, “Viet Nam welcomes the decision by Toronto’s authorities to disallow the flying of a flag that representing a regime that has not existed for 32 years.”

Dung stressed that the gold-starred red flag is the sole symbol of the independent and united Vietnamese State, which has been recognised and respected by the international community.

He went on to say the decision is in line with the development of the relationship between Viet Nam and Canada in general, and the friendly ties between Ho Chi Minh City and Toronto as sister cities in particular, for the common interests of both peoples.

The spokesman said he hoped that Vietnamese residing in Canada would support the decision of the court and authorities of Toronto.-Enditem
