France pledges help for Viet Nam's nuclear power

10/07/2007 -- 6:59 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - The French diplomat has affirmed his country's willingness to aid Viet Nam to develop a legal corridor for the construction of the first ever nuclear power plan.

French Ambassador G.F Blarel made the affirmation at a seminar in Ha Noi on July 10 where he presented the Vietnamese side the thermal-hydraulic system code CATHARE, a software for simulating severe accident sequences in a nuclear reactor.

The seminar on possible construction of the first ever nuclear power plant in Viet Nam , was jointly organised by the Ministries of Industry, and Science and Technology and the Embassy of France. The western European country is running 58 nuclear reactors for the generation of electricity.

The French Nuclear Energy Research Agency meanwhile committed to give support to building relevant laws and training human resources, and to share experiences with Vietnamese partners.

Since 2002, the agency has undertaken cooperation programmes with the Viet Nam Nuclear Energy Institute, the Energy Institute, the Ministry of Science and Technology and universities in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City .

On the Vietnamese side, Deputy Industry Minister Do Huu Hao admitted that the lack of a legal framework and qualified staff is currently a hindrance facing the country in the preparatory course for the construction of the nuclear power plant.

Viet Nam needs its first nuclear power plant in 2020 as it has set an electricity growth rate that doubles a GDP growth rate, the official said.

Viet Nam has planned to build the first nuclear power plant at Phuoc Dinh commune, Ninh Phuoc district in southern Ninh Thuan province.

Estimated to cost 3.4 billion USD, the plant was designed to have a capacity of 2,000 MW and generate between 14-15 billion kWh of power a year.-Enditem
