16/07/2007 -- 9:47 PM

071603_bongda.jpgHa Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam secured its very first Asian Cup quarterfinal berth despite being trounced 4-1 at home on July 16 to defending champions Japan.

The host team moved on thanks to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s 2-1 win over Qatar in another match that kicked off at the same time in Ho Chi Minh City.

In Group B match at My Dinh Stadium in Ha Noi, Viet Nam unexpectedly took the lead against the Asian powerhouses after Keita Suzuki own goaled just eight minutes in from the kickoff.

However, the Vietnamese celebrations were short lived as Seichiro Maki found the back of Vietnamese goalkeeper Hong Son's net at the 12 minute mark, while his teammate Yasuhito Endo blasted another in the 31st minute that allowed the visitors to go into the tunnel 2-1 up at the break.

After half time, Shunsuke Nakamura and Seichiro Maki scored a goal a piece on the 53rd and 58th minutes respectively, to give Japan an unassailable 4-1 lead.

With four points from its three matches, Viet Nam finished at second in Group B behind Japan and will play against the winner of Group A in a quarterfinal match in Thailand.-Enditem
