Party General Secretary gives prioritised tasks

Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam 's 12th National Assembly kicked off its opening session in the capital city of Ha Noi , on July 19, with a speech that promised a bright future for the country, by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh. The Vietnamese statesman called on the NA to not be content with meeting the high levels of achievements of previous assemblies but to continue to work to surpass them and reiterated that the public demanded that Viet Nam be lifted from its state of underdevelopment in order to realise the national goals of a prosperous, strong democratic and civilised society. In an bid to boost efficiency at the country's lawmaking body, General Secretary Manh urged the elected delegates in attendance focus on the five prioritised tasks of perfecting reforms in the economy in order to maintain rapid and sustainable growth; raising the NA’s supervision over the State apparatus; raising the NA's role in the national decision making process; continuing with external activities in a dynamic manner and increasing and improving contact with constituents. Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong of the 11th National Assembly said, “the National Assembly and its agencies would continue to improve on the quality of its law making work and show the public that it is deserving of its role in society." At the top of the agenda for assembly are elections for the posts of NA Chairman, Vice NA Chairman, members of the NA Standing Committee, State President, Vice State Presidents, Prime Minister, Chief Judge of the People’s Supreme Court and Director of the People’s Supreme Procuracy, titles of NA agencies and approvals of members of the Defence and Security Council. NA Chairman Trong, who is also Chairman of the Election Council for the 12th National Assembly, officially announced that 493 delegates had been elected to the 12th National Assembly.-Enditem
