Ha Noi (VNA) – Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Dung on July 19 rejected reports that Ho Chi Minh City police used force while dispersing a crowd of farmers that had gathered in the city for their petitions on land use right.
Dung said, “as we were informed, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong on July 15 asked the authorities to place a special importance on the case in order to resolve the citizens’ complaints in a timely and orderly manner.”
The procedures for the handling of complaints state that all Chairmen of People’s Committees in provinces and cities must immediately and personnally investigate cases of prolonged complaints in order to resolve them properly as quickly as possible, he noted, adding solutions must be lawful and reasonable.
Dung explained, “On the spirit of the law, on July 18, representatives of authorised agencies of Ho Chi Minh City and relevant localities met with complainants to persuade them to disperse as their case would be dealt with as soon as possible. By the evening all of the demonstrators had returned home.”
Regarding Thich Quang Do’s presence at the July 17 crowd of complainants, Dung said the fact that he was there was again proof that he had not been placed under home arrest and was obviously still free to lead a normal life. However, Dung added, his actions were not consistent with a man that purports to represent religion.-Enditem
