Workshop aims to keep traditional music alive

27/08/2007 -- 5:13 PM

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) - A workshop on how to teach traditional and court music at high schools was opened on Thursday by the Hue Centre for Monument Conservation.

Sixty teachers of music from junior high schools in Thua Thien-Hue Province attended the five-day workshop that was sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Viet Nam.
The workshop heard a lecture from Professor Tran Van Khe, master of traditional Vietnamese music and honorary member of the UNESCO’s International Music Council.

On Wednesday, Prof Khe spoke to 500 students from the Nguyen Tri Phuong and Thong Nhat high schools in Hue about traditional Vietnamese music and the royal court music of Hue.

These activities were part of a project funded by UNESCO to preserve the cultural value of nha nhac , or royal court music. Vietnamese nha nhac was recognised by UNESCO in November 2003 as one of 28 Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.-Enditem
