Cervical cancer treatment proves successful

28/08/2007 -- 11:22 AM

HCM City (VNA) – The Ho Chi Minh Tumor Hospital has recorded positive results in using high dose rate radiation therapy treatment for women with cervical cancer over the past five years, Director Nguyen Chan Hung announced on August 27.

Among 4,839 cervical cancer patients who received high dose rate radiation therapy for 7-20 minutes each session, the success rate was 97.7 percent for patients with a 2.6cm tumor and 94.7 percent for patients with a 3.9cm tumor, the director said.

Compared with low dose rate radiation therapy with periods of treatment lasting up to 20 hours, the higher dose can limit adverse side effects caused by radiation and patients do not need to be hospitalized, he noted.

The hospital is also using the method to treat patients with throat and esophagus cancer.-Enditem
