Thai gov’t full of praise for EWEC meeting

Da Nang (VNA) – Thai Deputy Finance Minister Sommai Phasee was full of praise for Viet Nam’s hosting of the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) Week and said Thailand is eager to host next year event.

The Thai government official made the remark at an investment-trade-tourism forum, as part of the EWEC Week, which took place in the central coastal city of Da Nang.

During the symposium, the governor of Laos’ Savannakhet province, Phomkhe Vilayvanh, said his province would use the EWEC Week as an opportunity to boost economic development and accelerate poverty reduction in his locality.

Director of the Da Nang Department for External Affairs Luong Minh Sam said the EWEC is a product of Greater Mekong Sub-regional cooperation which is expected to bring prosperity to the whole region.

Sam elaborated that the EWEC Week will act as a platform for further discussions on a range of issues that will provide greater opportunities for the development of the association.

Speaking at the seminar, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Country Director Ayumi Konishi said that the Mekong Sub-region project was initiated by the ADB in 1992 with a focus on infrastructure development to boost economic development in the sub-region. And the completion of a bridge spanning the Mekong River that links Thailand and Laos and opens up the East-West Economic Corridor is an integral component of the initiative.

As part of the event, the Caravan Field Trip along the EWEC will begin on August 29 and end on September 2.-Enditem
