Nation targets economic growth rate of 8.5 percent

Ha Noi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged government ministries to step up their efforts over the four remaining months of 2007 to obtain the targeted 8.5 percent economic growth rate set for the year.

At a cabinet meeting on the 2007 socio-economic development plan and State budget on September 5, PM Dung asked the cabinet to focus on increasing exports, scale back the trade deficit, tighten price controls, and reduce poverty.

According to a Ministry of Planning and Investment report, Viet Nam’s economy for 2007 will record a decade high growth rate of between 8.4-8.5 percent.

The agro-forestry-fisheries sector obtained a growth rate of between 3.2-3.3 percent, industry and construction, 10.6-10.7 percent, services – 8.7-8.8 percent. GDP per capita also increased to 835 USD.

PM Dung said 2008 GDP growth should hover between 9.1-9.2 percent, GDP per capita will come in at close 1,000 USD and the poverty rate should be slashed to 11 percent.

Administrative reform, human resource training, fighting against corruption and wastefulness were tasks to be continued, he said.-Enditem
