Lloyd’s Register Asia office opens

08/09/2007 -- 9:54 PM

Hai Phong (VNA) – Lloyd’s Register Asia opened a new office on September 7 in Hai Phong, the northern heartland of Viet Nam’s shipbuilding industry, expanding its presence in what is fast becoming one of Asia’s most productive marine markets.

The Hai Phong office will initially cater exclusively to the interests of the marine business of Lloyd’s Register Asia. It is the company’s second office in Viet Nam after Vung Tau.

“Viet Nam’s shipbuilding industry has been expanding at an impressive pace. The opening of the Hai Phong office is a clear indication of Lloyd’s Register Asia’s strong commitment to support the entire marine sector here,” said Andrew Easdown, senior vice president South Asia Marine. “We are very excited about the potential of Viet Nam’s shipbuilding sector”.

At the end of the first quarter this year, Viet Nam had more than 2.5 million gross tonnes of new ships, or roughly 1 percent of the global market, being built or on order at the country’s ambitious shipyards.

Currently the world’s 10 th largest shipbuilding nation by output, its goal is to be No.4 within 10 years.-Enditem
