Ha Noi (VNA) – Automakers in Viet Nam sold a combined 6,559 vehicles in August, up 73 percent over the same period in 2006, according to industry data released on Sept. 11.
It was the seventh consecutive month the industry recorded a year-on-year rise.
The Viet Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), a group consisting of the country’s 18 leading carmakers, attributed the increase to higher passenger car sales, which rose 146 percent year-on-year to 1,417 units last month.
The Commercial vehicle and SUV/MPV (sport utility vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles) segments registered a jump of 81 percent and 35 percent, respectively.
According to VAMA Chairman Udo Loersch, total car sales so far this year have grown 80 percent compared to the first eight months of 2006 to 41,557 units.
The companies sold 9,320 passengers cars so far this year, up 156 percent, due to the growing middle class, said VAMA.
The country currently has over 700,000 privately-owned cars, versus 19 million motorbikes.-Enditem
