24/09/2007 -- 5:07 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is to leave Ha Noi on September 24 to attend the annual 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York from September 25-28.

The session – also the 30th anniversary of Viet Nam’s accession into the UN - will be significant to the country as its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security council in the 2008-09 term will be decided.

Big dailies such as Nhan Dan (People), Quan Doi Nhan Dan (People’s Army), Ha Noi Moi (New Ha Noi), Sai Gon Giai Phong (Liberated Sai Gon) and Lao Dong (Labour) on September 24 all praised the event as a landmark which will open a new chapter in the long-term and fine relations between Viet Nam and the UN.

Nhan Dan daily carried an editorial, highlighting milestones in the relations between Viet Nam and the UN and stressing that the country has been taken part more actively in activities of the planet’s largest multilateral organisation and received appreciation from the international community.

The editorial further wrote that the relations is mirrored by the fact that as the UN has selected Viet Nam as one of the first eight countries in the world to apply the pilot “One UN” reform programme at the national level.

The daily said that Viet Nam’s nomination as the only Asian candidate to the non-permanent member of the UN Security council will be a good opportunity for the country to make more contributions to the development of the organisation in the future.

The Ha Noi Moi meanwhile ran an article entitled “Continuing efforts to boost cooperation, improve efficiency of the UN Security Council”, saying that Prime Minister Dung’s message in his speeches at the session is “A Viet Nam that makes active contribution, cooperation and being responsible in the international community”.

The daily further stated that Viet Nam would do its best to fulfill its tasks if it is elected to the UNSC and would continue contribute to issues including finding peaceful settlement to regional and international conflicts, boosting development cooperation, reforming and improving the efficiency of the UN Security Council.-Editem
