Ca Mau calls for release of fishermen in distress

Ca Mau (VNA) – The southernmost province of Ca Mau has urged Vietnamese Consulate and Embassy in Malaysia to take urgent measures to bring home two Vietnamese fishermen who are being put in temporary detention.

Duong Hoang Giang and Le Thanh Tung were reported missing after their fishing ship was hit hard by a foreign merchant ship on August 30.

In a letter sent to the provincial People’s Committee on September 19, Giang said they are currently in custody in Kuala Berang prison in Negeri Terengganu province, Malaysia.

According to the provincial Fisheries Department, the New Guardia ship of Panama run into the CM 99439 TS vessel on August 30, leaving the latter sunken. Seven members of the crew on board were rescued by a Thai ship and brought to the mainland in Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, on Sept. 2.

Meanwhile, Giang and Tung were fished out by members of the New Guardia ship, who later delivered them to Malaysian police, Giang said in his letter.-Enditem
