Viet Nam to play proactive role in resolving regional and global issues

25/09/2007 -- 9:01 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The US’s Wall Street Journal has run a four-page special advertising section on Viet Nam’s achievements in all aspects on the occasion Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in New York for the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The article, called “Beginning of a new era for Vietnamese diplomacy,” wrote that: “Nguyen Tan Dung, youngest Vietnamese prime minister since 1975, arrived in New York on September 24 for a historic mission: launching Viet Nam to the global stage. He will address the UN General Assembly and his presence is of great significance for his country.

“Today, Viet Nam is at another turning point – about to join the Security Council as a non-permanent member. Together with the five members and nine non permanent members, Viet Nam will debate and decide important matters relating to world peace and security.”

It continued: “There is reason to believe that given its news international standing, Viet Nam will play a proactive role in resolving regional and global issues. Viet Nam’s success in hunger eradication and poverty reduction has surprised the United Nations and other members pursuing the millennium goals. A new foreign policy of openness and engagement has gained Viet Nam new friends and new channels to peacefully resolve conflicts and disputes.”

According to the article, Viet Nam’s enhanced world role is supported by its dynamic economic growth over the past 20 years since Viet Nam embarked upon renovation (Doi Moi) and world integration. Economically, the past year has seen many records in foreign direct investment and trade.

The section also carried another article, entitled “Playing a greater role on a global stage,” by Darrell Delamaide, a freelance writer based in Washington D.C.

The article said: “Viet Nam first registered as a candidate for the Security Council in 1997 and has paid its dues over the past decade by actively working in the UN framework to help with conflict resolution. An election now to the Security Council would lend further momentum to the country’s growing role in world affairs.”-Enditem
