Rice experts offer seeds of growth

09/10/2007 -- 10:15 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – More than 50 scientists from 13 countries worldwide gathered at a conference in Ha Noi on October 8-9 to show farmers how to get better access to water-efficient irrigation systems and improve on productivity.

At the conference, participants said research conducted by the International Rice Research Centre (IRRI) and the Viet Nam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) showed that wetting technology can help to reduce between 15-20 percent of total water use during the dry season and slash pumping costs while maintaining or even boosting productivity by 15 percent.

According to the IRRI, wet rice accounts for up to 75 percent of the world’s demand. The importance of wet rice is demonstrated within the context of global rice price hikes hit record high in a decade while supply has plummeted to its lowest levels over the past 30 years.

In Viet Nam, wet rice fields account for around 80 percent of the country’s total rice acreage of over 4.3 million ha, supplying about 90 percent of the total 36 million tonnes of output.

The experts said that Viet Nam should learn from other countries’ experiences in wet rice cultivation for better water and land usage and management.-Enditem
