Ha Noi (VNA) – Russian and British ambassadors to Viet Nam eyed Viet Nam ’s bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council as the country’s assuming more responsibility for global affairs and more international recognition. Viet Nam ’s candidacy to the UNSC non-permanent seat for the 2008-2009 tenure has a strong foundations of impressive socio-economic achievements over the recent past and its increasing reputation around the world, Russian Ambassador to Viet Nam Vadim Serafimov told a reporter from the “Labour” newspaper recently. This, he said, is reflected in the fact that Viet Nam is the only nation to be nominated by all Asian UN members for the UNSC non-permanent seat. Viet Nam has also gained strong support from other countries, including Russia , he added. “We appreciate that Viet Nam has fully realised joining the UNSC is not only an important factor to raise its external political prestige but also a great responsibility,” Ambassador Serafimov said. He expressed his hope that once the country got the UNSC seat, Viet Nam will contribute to increasing the reputation and the efficiency of UN work. Meanwhile, British Ambassador to Viet Nam Robert Gordon said Viet Nam has a bigger concept of its international responsibility, reflected in its “taking on a little bit of the burden of helping trouble spots in the world get better”. “ Viet Nam has started to make big progress in internal reforms and economic reforms, and it is now able to match this with a steadily widening international role, which is no loger just in the region, but in the world,” the diplomat said. According to the British Ambassador, European Union ambassadors were very happy to hear Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh’s speech on the country’s four priorities, including working with UN Security Council partners to maintain peace security, reinforcing UN actions against weapons of mass destruction, fighting against terrorism, and reforming the UNSC. “All these things are very important for the UNSC,” he said. Gordon told the reporter he believed Viet Nam will have a lot of contributions to make, not just in peace keeping missions, but a one-UN programme. “ Viet Nam is a very good example of success in development,” he added.- Enditem
