Fatherland Front urged to take lead in supporting the poor

Ha Noi (VNA) - Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung called on all agencies and organisations, especially the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF), to take the lead in gathering people from all walks of life to aid the poor.

The Deputy PM made the call at a meeting held in Ha Noi on October 16 by the VFF Central Committee to launch a "Month for the Poor" (from Oct, 17-Nov. 18) and announced October 17 to be Viet Nam 's Day for the Poor.

Deputy PM Hung stressed that Viet Nam 's activities for the poor to realise the country's commitment to the UN millennium goals (MGs). Viet Nam is striving to obtain the MGs by 2010.

According to the VVF Central Committee, the "Day for the Poor" movement, launched nearly seven years ago, has raised funds and created resources to contribute to the national poverty reduction process. The rate of the poor has annually reduced by 2.8 percent. The Fund for the Poor at all levels have received nearly 1,800 billion VND and repaired more than 742,000 houses for poor households.

However, the country has more than 431,000 dilapidated houses that need to be repaired or rebuilt.-Enditem
