Viet Nam, England promote educational cooperation

London (VNA) - Viet Nam and England signed a Memorandum of Collaboration in Education in London on October 16. Inking the agreement were Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan, State Secretary for Innovation, Universities and Skills of England John Denham and State Secretary for and the Department for Children, Schools and Families of England Ed. Balls. Speaking at the singing ceremony, Nhan said that the memorandum would benefit both sides, and usher in a new stage of Viet Nam-England educational cooperation, from general education to tertiary education. Under the agreement, England will help Viet Nam improve the teaching capacity of Vietnamese university lecturers through a doctoral training programme, boost the levels of English teaching in the country via a teacher training programme for teachers of English and set up organisations to monitor the quality of education at university and other levels in Viet Nam. The same day, Deputy PM Nhan worked with Shahid Malik, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for International Development (DFID). The two sides exchanged views on matters relating to UK government aid to the Vietnamese educational sector. Under Secretary Malik pledged to provide funding for Viet Nam to develop a model of two periods of school per day at primary schools in remote areas. Nguyen Xuan Vang, Director of the Ha Noi University, said that the Vietnamese government hope to improve and accelerate English teaching in the country in the next 10 years, so all Vietnamese university graduates will be able to use English fluently and all general school graduates will be able to communicate in English by 2020.-Enditem
