Deputy PM tours northern mountain Dien Bien

Dien Bien (VNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said ethnic minority groups need better care during his inspection tour of the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien from October 15-17.

At a working session with the Dien Bien Party Organisation, Deputy PM Trong, who is also head of the steering board for northwestern development, expressed his appreciation of Dien Bien's achievements over the past three years.

He called on the province to accelerate its economic restructuring, while improving people's living conditions, reduce poverty and narrow the gap between it and other provinces in the region.

Dien Bien province, set up on January 1, 2004 by splitting from Lai Chau province, has seven districts, a township and a city, with a population of 460,000 people, including people of the Thai ethnic minority group (40.4 percent), Mong group (28.8 percent), Kinh group (19.7 percent) and Kho Mu group (3.2 percent).

The province shares a 398 km border with Laos and China .

Recently GDP growth has averaged 10.5 percent, and the number of poor families in the areas have decreased by 5 percent annually.-Enditem
