Farmers find way to access supermarkets

25/10/2007 -- 11:38 AM

Binh Duong (VNA) – Farmers in the southern province of Binh Duong are losing money because they are forced to sell their fruits and vegetables to wholesalers, local authorities have said.

Nguyen Thi Dien, chairwoman of Binh Duong Province’s Department of Trade and Tourism, said a recent farm and supermarket seminar chaired by the department, that supermarkets prefer to buy from wholesales and not directly from farmers.

Doan Minh Chien, owner of a 26ha farm in Tan Uyen in Binh Duong province, said his farm produces 200-250 tonnes of products every year, and its annual revenues is 2.5 billion VND.

But he must sell to the Thu Duc and Binh Dien wholesale markets at a cheaper price than what he would get from the supermarket.

“I think this is a huge problem between the farmers, supermarkets and consumers,” Chien said.

He said supermarkets in Binh Duong province want their produce in the cleanest condition with no dirt attached and prefer certificates that indicate high quality and sanitary conditions.

Huynh Thi Thanh Phuong, Hai Long Trade and Services Company director, said supermarkets did not want to sign contracts with farmers whole products are seasonal only.

Better relations between farmers and retail companies were needed, attendants at the seminar said.-Enditem
