Infrastructure, hi-tech development given priorities

26/10/2007 -- 5:11 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Infrastructure, hi-tech and human resources development will come high on the list of Viet Nam’s priorities for investment promotion in 2008, said Phan Huu Thang, Director of the Overseas Investment Department.

Investment promotion activities will target key markets such as Japan, the Republic of Korea, the US and Europe, Thang said at a seminar to boost investment in the northern region held in Ha Noi on October 26.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment will coordinate with relevant agencies to organise conferences in different parts of the country to provide more information on investment environment and have dialogue with foreign investors who are doing business in Viet Nam .

However, Thang cited the lacks of a master plan and close coordination between central agencies and localities as major obstacles.

Therefore, the department has put forth a series of measures to better investment promotion activities. Besides improving the information quality, agencies specialising in promoting investment should be established at all levels, acting as bridges between domestic and foreign businesses.

The department will pay more attention to diversify investment promotion activities and create favourable conditions for foreign investors to do business in Viet Nam .

Since the Foreign Investment Law came into effect in 1988, Viet Nam has attracted over 8,100 projects worth at 75 billion USD from 81 countries and territories worldwide.

According to a recent Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) survey, Viet Nam ranks third in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of business environment, after China and Thailand . The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTD)’s World Investment Report released in October 17 showed that the country is the sixth most attractive investment destinations in the world, after China, India, the US, Russia and Brazil.-Enditem
